Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this BEAUTIFULLY ENGRAVED over-and-under shotgun for auction; this is the Browning Superposed Pointer Grade!
The Browning Superposed Pointer Grade is a distinguished high-grade variant of the legendary Superposed over-under shotgun, celebrated for its elegant aesthetics and premium craftsmanship. Produced from 1959 to 1966, with limited availability thereafter by special order, the Pointer Grade features a silver-grey engraved receiver adorned with detailed game scene engravings—a pointer dog on one side and a setter on the other—symbolizing its upland hunting heritage. These engravings were initially crafted by master engraver Felix Funken, with the final design later standardized and executed by renowned engraver Louis Vrancken—both pivotal figures in establishing Browning’s legacy of fine firearm artistry—while this particular example is signed "J.BAERTEN" on both sides of the action, denoting the work of FN Master Engraver Jose Baerten. Complemented by select checkered walnut stocks with finely sculpted lines and rich finish, the Pointer Grade stands as a premier example of the balance between mechanical excellence and traditional European engraving mastery.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Superposed is one of the most iconic over-under shotguns ever made, representing a remarkable fusion of craftsmanship, performance, and design innovation. Conceived by the legendary John M. Browning, it was his final design and the first commercially successful over-under shotgun brought to market. Introduced in 1931, the Superposed was designed to compete with high-end European doubles, offering American sportsmen a premium shotgun with exceptional balance, reliability, and aesthetic appeal. It featured a boxlock action with a unique twin-trigger setup in early models, later evolving into single, selective trigger options. The gun was instantly recognizable for its sleek profile, beautifully figured walnut stocks, and hand-fitted, hand-finished construction. Produced at the FN (Fabrique Nationale) factory in Herstal, Belgium, the Superposed remained in production for decades, with variations in grade, engraving, and fitment, culminating in the high-grade Presentation models that were true works of art. Each gun was labor-intensive to produce, resulting in high costs, but its performance and finish more than justified the price for serious upland hunters, clay shooters, and collectors.

Over the decades, the Superposed has become a symbol of fine gunmaking and a favorite among those who appreciate traditional craftsmanship and timeless performance. The shotgun was offered in various configurations to suit field and sporting use, with gauges ranging from 12 to 28 and even .410 bore, and barrel lengths tailored to specific shooting disciplines. One of the standout features of the Superposed is its handling—thanks to superb weight distribution and Browning’s design intuition, it swings effortlessly and points naturally, making it a joy to use in the field or on the range. While production shifted over time due to rising manufacturing costs and competition from more cost-effective models like the Citori (also by Browning), the Superposed remains highly sought after by enthusiasts. Its hand-checkered walnut stocks, richly blued barrels, and intricate engraving patterns (especially in the higher grades) contribute to its reputation as not just a tool, but a legacy piece. Today, owning a Browning Superposed is seen as owning a part of shotgun history—a tribute to one of the most innovative minds in firearms and a testament to the golden age of sporting gun design.
