According to the INCLUDED factory letters from the Colt Manufacturing Company, these special Pythons were part of a 6 gun shipment on May 26, 2004 to Cherokee Publications (5402 N.W. 60th Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri).
As we all know, in the history of modern double action American handguns, the Colt Python revolver stands above all others. It was born in the mid-1950's in a post-war era in which quality was already starting to fall from the heights that American gun making had attained in the 1930's and 40's. Going against the grain of fast, mass production firearms made of stamped and fabricated parts and "Space Age" plastics and aluminum, the Python was intended to be the finest revolver ever made in America, and it met that goal.
Now that we have hit on the history of the original Python, lets dive into the extraordinary examples that we have here today, because they are quite honestly a HUGE part of Colt history as well. The Wilkerson model was a special run of Combat Pythons with spherical radius at the muzzle and a round butt. In his comprehensive work, "Colt's Python King of the Seven Serpents" Gurney Brown states that there were only 13 of these guns produced and that these are the only consecutively numbered pair in existence. We have expanded our research and have learned through the Colt Archives that out of the 13 Combat Pythons manufactured, these are two Pythons that are a consecutive set as in they came off the assembly line concurrently and were not sold as a "consecutive serial set from colt."
These EXACT revolvers are featured on the back cover of the book and also appear on pages 98 and 99. The guns feature checkered walnut service grips, two-line barrel address and single pin fastened red ramp front and white outline rear sights. One may say this is a true Museum Grade find, due to the scarcity and extremely Limited Production of this model and these exact firearms being published in the Python book.
