Markings: Standard / The lock plate is stamped with a “crown over Neisse”, along with the date of manufacture, “1835”. The left side of the barrel is stamped “1835”, along with “Crown/Over FW” proof mark and a “Crown/Over B” proof mark. Both sides of the buttstock are stamped with cartouches.
Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The “Model 1831” is most accurately called the Model 1809/31 — a percussion-lock form of the earlier Prussian Model 1809 “Potsdam” musket (the 1809 flintlock being the standard Prussian infantry arm during the Napoleonic era). Beginning around 1831, many existing 1809 flintlock muskets were converted to percussion ignition by replacing the pan and frizzen with a percussion bolster and new lockplate while generally retaining the original barrel, stock, and furniture; these conversions (and a smaller number of percussion-built examples) were carried out at several Prussian arsenals, and markings such as “Neisse” indicate manufacture at those facilities. The Model 1831 was a large, smoothbore muzzleloader (roughly .71–.75 caliber) with a barrel measuring nearly 41 1/4 inches and an overall length of approximately 56–57 inches. Advances in small-arms technology — most notably the adoption of the Dreyse needle gun in the 1840s — rendered these smoothbores obsolete for front-line service, and many surplus 1809/31 muskets were exported (some reaching the United States, where they saw limited use in the Civil War).
