Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The most-produced Colt percussion revolver was not one of the large Army models, but the unassuming 1849 Pocket, which evolved from the .31 caliber Model 1848 Baby Dragoon introduced in 1847. By 1850, the design had been revised into what became known as the Model 1849 Pocket, featuring a round-backed trigger guard and a loading lever, making it more practical for concealed carry. The 1848 and 1849 models shared a single combined serial number range, making the transition between patterns somewhat unclear. The first pattern had a square-backed trigger guard, round cylinder stop notches, a 5-shot cylinder, no loading lever, and an “Indian Fight” cylinder scene. The second pattern introduced a round-backed trigger guard, a “Stagecoach Hold Up” cylinder scene, and a loading lever, while retaining the round cylinder stop notches. This was followed by a third pattern with square cylinder stop notches, which accounted for the majority of production.

Overall, Colt manufactured approximately 340,000 Pocket revolvers in the United States between 1850 and 1873, with an additional roughly 11,000 produced at the London armory between 1853 and 1856. Production ended in the U.S. as Colt shifted to self-contained cartridge firearms. Favored for its compact size and practicality, the Model 1849 Pocket played a notable role during westward expansion and the California Gold Rush.
