Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The U.S. Springfield Model 1842 musket was a .69-inch smoothbore infantry musket adopted in 1842 and manufactured at the Springfield and Harpers Ferry armories, as well as by a few private contractors, during the mid-19th century. It was a descendant of the earlier Model 1816 series but was treated as its own standardized model, incorporating improvements that had been retrofitted into previous designs. The Model 1842 was the first general-issue U.S. musket built from the start with a percussion lock, offering significantly greater reliability than the flintlock, and it was also the last .69 caliber smoothbore musket produced by federal arsenals. With a 42-inch barrel, with the overall length of 58 inches, and weighing roughly 9.8 pounds, it emphasized robust construction and thicker barrels, anticipating later rifling for conical Minié-type bullets. About 275,000 were produced between 1844 and 1855, including 6,020 by the Palmetto Armory in South Carolina for state militia use, some distinguished by brass furniture and unique markings.

Between 1856 and 1859, Model 1842 muskets were rifled to fire Minié balls, with roughly 10,000 of them fitted with long-range rear sights to improve accuracy. Despite these conversions, the .69 caliber remained less accurate than the newer .58 caliber rifles, and the Army subsequently standardized on the .58 caliber Minié ball used in the Springfield Models 1855 and 1861. Both smoothbore and rifled versions of the Model 1842 saw service during the American Civil War, bridging the transition from traditional round balls to more modern conical ammunition.
