The Colt Open Top Pocket Model Revolver was a single-action pocket revolver introduced by Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company in 1871. Alongside the Colt House Revolver, it was one of the first two rear-loading metallic cartridge revolvers produced by Colt. It also holds the distinction of being among the first pocket-sized metallic cartridge revolvers made by the company. With the expiration of the Rollin White patent for bored-through cylinders around 1870, Colt—until then limited to producing the Richards-Mason conversions—began developing its own metallic cartridge revolvers. In 1871, the company debuted its first rear-loading models: the Colt House (also known as the Cloverleaf) and the Colt Open Top Pocket Model.

During the 1870s, the market was flooded with low-cost imitations of the .22 caliber Smith & Wesson Model One, often selling for just $2. Rather than compete in the bargain basement, Colt’s president, Richard Jarvis, chose a different path—insisting that Colt’s .22 revolver would uphold the brand’s reputation for quality. Priced at $8, the Open Top Pocket was a premium offering, crafted to Colt’s exacting standards. Though it no longer carries its original price tag, this particular example remains in fine overall condition—a testament to Colt’s enduring craftsmanship. Featuring original engraving and a lustrous nickel finish, this revolver has waited over 150 years for a new home. Now, it’s ready to become a part of your collection.
