Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this SCARCE single-action revolver today for a penny-start auction, this is the Colt Single Action Army!

According to the Colt Factory letter, this particular firearm, bearing serial number 29440, was originally chambered for the .45 Eley Short cartridge. The barrel length is not specified, nor is the type of stocks listed. It was finished in blue and shipped to Colt's Patent Fire Arms London Agency, located at 14 Pall Mall, London, England, on August 31, 1876, as part of a shipment of 50 units.

According to the letter by Keith Cochran Author of the Colt Peacemaker British Model Book, British Model Colt Peacemaker No.29,440 was the model used for the dustjacket for my book COLT PEACEMAKER BRITISH MODEL. The last four digits of the serial number, "9440", can be read on the cylinder in the picture. This picture was then used in miniature on such pages as 4, 6, 100, 159, and 160. The caliber "45 CAL / B" can be seen on the trigger guard frame. The "B" does not denote Boxer but British, and as this is an 1876 shipment, it would be .450 Eley.

This revolver is a 5 1/2-inch .450 Eley shipped with a blue finish and walnut grips in 1876. Colt shipped 2,697 peacemakers and 84 flattop revolvers to their London Agency between late 1874 and about 1896. With this amount of guns shipped, this is considered a scarce caliber as this is only 75% or less than one percent of production in the standard-frame model.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Army (SAA), also known as the Colt .45 or Colt Peacemaker, is an iconic revolver that has become a symbol of the American West since its introduction in 1873 by Samuel Colt. Developed to meet the U.S. Army's demand for a reliable sidearm, its single-action mechanism required the hammer to be manually cocked before firing, providing faster, more reliable shots suitable for both military and civilian use. The SAA was adopted by the Army and became a standard issue during the Indian Wars, praised for its significant stopping power and durability. Beyond military applications, it gained immense popularity among cowboys, lawmen, and outlaws, with associations with famous figures like Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid, solidifying its status as a cultural icon.

Over the years, the Colt SAA has seen various calibers and designs, with production briefly halting during World War II before resuming in modern times, preserving its classic look. Today, it remains a celebrated firearm, featured in countless films and books, and is highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike, embodying a unique blend of history, functionality, and cultural significance.
