Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Parker Bros. “Lifter” hammer-side-by-side shotgun is an iconic example of 19th-century American sporting arms, representing the early period of Parker Brothers' production before the widespread adoption of top-lever actions. Introduced in the mid-1870s, the Lifter model is distinguished by its under-lever opening mechanism, which requires the shooter to lift a lever located ahead of the trigger guard to unlock the barrels. Combined with exposed external hammers, this design reflects the transitional era of shotgun development when reliability and mechanical strength were paramount. Renowned for their robust construction and fine craftsmanship, Parker Lifter shotguns were offered in a range of gauges, barrel lengths, and grades, from utilitarian field guns to more elaborately finished sporting pieces. Features commonly included Damascus-steel barrels, finely fitted actions, and well-shaped walnut stocks, often accented with tasteful engraving, depending on grade. Today, Parker Bros. Lifter hammer shotguns are highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts for their historical significance, mechanical elegance, and role in establishing Parker as one of America’s premier shotgun makers.
