Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Gewehr 71, also known as the Infanterie-Gewehr 71, stands as a defining milestone in the history of military rifles. It marked the beginning of a legendary series of bolt-action rifles designed and manufactured by Paul Mauser and his brother Wilhelm at the Mauser company. The adoption of this rifle had profound consequences for the development of military small arms, laying the groundwork for future breakthroughs in firearm technology. Its mass production at the Spandau Arsenal, along with manufacturing by various German arsenals and the Austrian company Steyr, further solidified its crucial role in the newly unified German Empire's military forces. Paul Mauser's development of the bolt-action rifle took place between 1866 and 1871. The design process was driven by the need for a more efficient and reliable weapon than the existing rifles, such as the Dreyse needle gun, which had exposed critical flaws during the Franco-Prussian War.

The Mauser rifle was tested during military trials in 1870 and 1871, competing against several other designs, with the most significant rival being the M1869 Bavarian Werder rifle. While the Werder had been explicitly designed for the Bavarian Army, the Mauser rifle demonstrated superior performance, especially in terms of reliability and mechanical efficiency. On December 2, 1871, the Mauser rifle was provisionally adopted by the German military, pending the refinement of its safety mechanism. The rifle’s initial design featured a straightforward bolt-action mechanism with a strong, yet simple, locking system. The key to its success was the innovative use of a single locking lug positioned forward of the receiver bridge, which provided a more secure and reliable locking action. However, concerns over the rifle's safety mechanism led to additional testing and refinement.

With support from the Spandau Arsenal, Mauser enhanced the safety mechanism, ensuring the rifle's safe operation even under the most demanding combat conditions. These refinements led to the official adoption of the gun on February 14, 1872, as the Infantry Rifle Model 1871. The Gewehr 71 addressed the shortcomings of the Dreyse needle gun, which had proven unreliable and prone to misfires. One of the Gewehr 71’s most iconic features was the Mauser "wing" safety lever, designed to allow easy engagement and disengagement of the safety. The Gewehr 71 came chambered in the 11x60mmR Mauser black powder cartridge. In 1884, the Gewehr 71 was upgraded with the addition of an 8-round tubular magazine designed by Alfred von Kropatschek. This transformation turned the rifle into a repeating firearm, capable of firing multiple rounds without reloading after each shot. This innovation led to the rifle being redesignated as the Gewehr 1871/84, marking it as Germany’s first repeating rifle. The Gewehr 71 played a critical role in shaping the future of military firearms. The Mauser bolt-action system became the standard for military rifles worldwide, influencing infantry weapons for decades to come.
