Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1873, often dubbed "The Gun That Won the West," is an iconic rifle that was produced between 1873 and 1923, cementing its legacy as one of the most successful lever-action rifles of its time. Originally chambered in the popular .44-40 cartridge, it was later made available in the .38-40 and .32-20 cartridges, allowing for ammunition compatibility with handguns of the era. The Model 1873 was produced in three primary configurations—24-inch barrel rifles, 20-inch barrel carbines, and the rarer 30-inch "musket" model aimed at military contracts—though it could also be customized to order with features like octagonal barrels or color case-hardened receivers. In the 1870s, Winchester enhanced the rifle's prestige by introducing the "One of One Thousand" grade, a limited series of highly accurate rifles, which became highly coveted by collectors. Despite the original Model 1873 never being chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge, modern reproductions now cater to enthusiasts of this classic caliber.

With over 720,000 rifles produced, the Model 1873's legacy continues today, with Uberti manufacturing high-quality replicas, staying true to the original design while incorporating safety features like a firing pin block and improved cartridge ejection. The rifle's enduring popularity is also fueled by modern cowboy action shooting and its cultural impact, including its role in the 1950 film Winchester '73.
