Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1884 was one of the last significant iterations of the "Trapdoor" Springfield rifle series. While other versions of the "Trapdoor" Springfield were produced after 1884, the Model 1884 represented the final major redesign before the Springfield Armory shifted its focus to the development of the Krag-Jørgensen rifle in the 1890s. The Model 1884 was based on the earlier Model 1873 Trapdoor, incorporating elements from its predecessors. While the Model 1884 retained much of the same appearance as the Model 1873, it featured several important improvements, including refinements to the breechblock and lock mechanism, as well as a new serrated trigger for better control. The Model 1884 saw widespread use in several significant conflicts, although its numbers were far fewer than those of earlier rifles like the Model 1861 Rifled Musket.

Notably, the Springfield Model 1884 was used during the Indian Wars (roughly 1862–1890), the Spanish-American War (1898), and the Philippine-American War (1899-1902), where it was valued for its reliability, though by the end of the 19th century, it was being replaced by more modern repeating rifles.
