Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1876 Third Model in .40-60 Winchester is a classic lever-action rifle that embodies the power and prestige of Winchester’s Centennial-era firearms. Introduced in 1876 to commemorate the nation’s hundredth anniversary, this rifle was designed as a larger, stronger alternative to the Model 1873, capable of handling true rifle cartridges rather than the handgun calibers of earlier lever guns. This particular example features a 28-inch octagon barrel with a dovetail blade front sight and adjustable ladder-style rear sight, a configuration well-suited for accurate shooting at extended ranges. The smooth walnut straight-grip stock and forearm offer a traditional, streamlined profile, while the blued finish gives it both durability and a classic appearance. The Third Model is distinguished by its integral dust cover rail, a refinement that set it apart from the earlier First and Second Models. Chambered in .40-60 Winchester, this rifle balanced manageable recoil with effective performance for hunting medium to large game. The cartridge, introduced in 1879, quickly became popular with sportsmen who wanted a lighter-shooting round than the powerful .45-75 but still demanded solid downrange performance. The Model 1876 itself was offered in multiple chamberings, including .45-60, .50-95 Express, and the original .45-75, with the .40-60 standing out as a versatile option for hunters of deer, elk, and similar-sized game. With a production total of 63,871 rifles across all variants, the 1876 was not as widely made as other Winchester models, and surviving examples—especially Third Models—are highly prized by collectors. Its use by the North-West Mounted Police, Texas Rangers, and even historical figures such as Theodore Roosevelt and Geronimo cements its legacy as both a practical hunting rifle of the frontier and a storied piece of American history.
