Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mauser Model 1871, known as the Gewehr 71 or Infanterie-Gewehr 71 (marked as "I.G.Mod.71" on the rifles), was the first in a notable series designed by Paul and Wilhelm Mauser at the Mauser company and later mass-produced at the Spandau arsenal. Unlike its predecessor, the Dreyse needle gun used in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), which had several shortcomings, the Gewehr 71 featured a newly developed "wing" type safety lever. This conventional bolt-action rifle was chambered for 11mm black powder cartridges and initially designed as a single-shot with a bolt guide rib as its only locking lug. Following troop trials in 1882 and 1883, the design was revised in 1884 to include an 8-round tubular magazine created by Alfred von Kropatschek, marking the introduction of the German Army's first repeating rifle. This updated model, the Gewehr 1871/84, saw over a million units produced.
