The Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver was produced from 1878 into the early 1900s, with approximately 51,000 units manufactured in various calibers and configurations. Collectors view it as an important transitional revolver that bridged Colt’s famous single-action designs and later double-action handguns.

The Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver was one of Colt’s earliest serious attempts at producing a reliable double-action handgun for military and civilian markets. Introduced in the late 19th century, it was designed by William Mason and featured a large-frame construction capable of handling powerful cartridges of the era, such as the .45 Colt. The revolver could be fired either in double-action mode, by pulling the trigger to both cock and release the hammer, or in single-action mode for more deliberate, precise shots. This versatility made it appealing at a time when shooters were transitioning from single-action-only designs.
 
Although innovative, the Model 1878 developed a mixed reputation due to its complex internal mechanism, which could be less durable under hard use compared to simpler revolvers. Despite this, it saw limited military adoption and was popular among civilians, lawmen, and frontiersmen who valued its power and flexibility. Today, the Colt Model 1878 is appreciated primarily as a collectible, representing an important evolutionary step in revolver design. Its blend of old-world craftsmanship and mechanical ambition reflects a pivotal period in the development of modern handguns.
