Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt M1877 was a double-action revolver manufactured by Colt’s Patent Firearms from January 1877 to 1909, with a total production of 166,849 units. The Model 1877 was offered in three calibers, which later earned them three unofficial nicknames: the "Lightning," the "Thunderer," and the "Rainmaker." The principal distinction between the models was the cartridge in which they were chambered: the “Lightning” in .38 Long Colt, the "Thunderer" in .41 Long Colt, and the rare “Rainmaker” in .32 Long Colt. The Lightning and Thunderer models had six-round cylinders, while the Rainmaker also featured a six-shot cylinder but was produced in far fewer numbers, making it particularly rare. Designed by William Mason, one of the inventors of the Colt Single Action Army (M1873), the M1877 was Colt's first successful double-action revolver. It was the first commercially successful U.S.-made double-action cartridge revolver, which was offered from the factory in two basic finishes: nickel-plated or blued with a case-colored frame. Barrel lengths ranged from 2.5 to 7.5 inches, and the revolver could be ordered with or without the ejector rod and housing. Short-barreled versions without the ejector rod were marketed as "shopkeeper’s specials," intended as concealable pocket pistols. Grips were typically hard rubber, and the revolver’s simple, solid-frame design was both durable and elegant for the period.

Neither "Lightning" nor "Thunderer" was the official Colt designation; these names were coined by Benjamin Kittredge, one of Colt's major distributors, who also introduced the term "Peacemaker" for the Single Action Army and other model nicknames. Collectors often note that while the M1877 represented an important step in Colt’s development of double-action revolvers, its heavy trigger pull and delicate mechanism sometimes limited its popularity among shooters of the era. Today, the Colt Model 1877 is highly sought after by collectors for its historical significance, innovative double-action design, and unique place in the development of American revolvers.
