Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the early 1890s, the U.S. Army sought to replace its outdated Springfield Model 1873 "trapdoor" single-shot rifles with a more modern firearm. In response, a competition was held in 1892 at Governors Island, New York, where rifle designs from Lee, Krag–Jørgensen, Mannlicher, Mauser, Schmidt–Rubin, and approximately 40 other military and civilian contenders were evaluated. Despite objections from domestic inventors and arms manufacturers—two of whom, Russell and Livermore, even sued the government over the selection—the Krag–Jørgensen design was ultimately chosen by the board of officers. Between 1894 and 1904, approximately 500,000 Krag rifles and carbines were produced at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. These included several distinct models, most notably the Model 1892, Model 1896, and Model 1898, each produced in both rifle and carbine configurations, as well as the later Model 1899 carbine and specialized constabulary versions built for service in the Philippines.

The Springfield Krag, which saw its first combat during the latter years of the American Indian Wars, offered significant advantages over the Trapdoor rifles due to its five-shot capacity compared to the Trapdoor's single shot. The Krag–Jørgensen served as the U.S. Army's primary rifle from 1894 to 1903, participating in both the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War before being replaced by the M1903 Springfield rifle, which used the ballistically similar .30-03 cartridge.
