Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Police was a small-frame revolver produced from 1896 to 1907, built on a modified New Pocket framewith a longer square butt. Essentially an enlarged version of the Colt New Pocket, it was chambered in .32 Colt and .32 Colt New Police and offered in blued or bright nickel finishes. The New Police gained historical significance when New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt selected it as the first official issue sidearm for the NYPD, cementing its place in law enforcement history. Barrel lengths ranged from 2½", 4", and 6", with black hard rubber grips featuring molded checkering and the Colt logo, providing a practical yet refined design for duty or personal defense. The Colt New Police Target was a specialized variant featuring a 6-inch barrel and fitted with target sights, making it the first Colt swing-out cylinder target revolver. Produced from 1897 to 1907, it retained the same chamberings of .32 Colt and .32 Colt New Police, combining the portability of the New Police frame with features optimized for precision shooting. Both models represent Colt’s early experimentation with small-frame revolvers designed for law enforcement, personal defense, and emerging target shooting disciplines, highlighting the company’s innovation at the turn of the 20th century.
