Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Springfield Model 1898 is part of the broader Springfield Model 1892–99 series of Krag-Jørgensen rifles—Norwegian-designed bolt actions adopted by the U.S. Army in 1892. Manufactured exclusively at Springfield Armory under license, these rifles were chambered in .30-40 Krag and became the first smokeless-powder repeating rifles issued to American forces. Featuring a smooth-operating bolt and the Krag’s distinctive side-loading gate, the Model 1898 offered excellent accuracy, mild recoil, and mechanical refinement that set it apart from many contemporaries. With a full 30-inch barrel, blued finish, and solid walnut stock, it represented the U.S. military’s transition into modern bolt-action rifle design. The Model 1898 gained historical prominence through its service in the Spanish-American War and subsequent campaigns, becoming one of the defining American rifles of the late 19th century.

The Model 1898 gained historical prominence through its service in the Spanish-American War and subsequent campaigns, becoming one of the defining American rifles of the late 19th century.
However, combat experience revealed the Krag’s main drawback: its elegant side-loading magazine was noticeably slower to recharge than the clip-fed Spanish Mausers it faced in battle. This shortcoming ultimately led to its replacement by the Springfield Model 1903, a rifle heavily influenced by Mauser design principles but still retaining some Krag elements. Despite being phased out of frontline service, the American Krag remained widely available and is now the most common and affordable variant among Krag rifles. Many were later sporterized for hunting use, but original examples like this 1901-manufactured Model 1898 are valued by collectors for their smooth action, historical significance, and connection to a formative era in U.S. military arms development.
