Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this unique version of an absolutely iconic single-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Bisley Model Single Action Army “Belly Gun”!
The Colt Bisley Model Single Action Army "Belly Gun" is a rare and highly sought-after variation of the standard Bisley revolver, notable for its short barrel—typically around 2 to 3 inches—and the absence of an ejector rod housing. Designed for discreet carry and close-quarters defense, the Belly Gun variant maintained the Bisley’s distinctive downward-curving grip and low-slung hammer but offered a far more compact profile. These revolvers were often modified after purchase, making original factory examples exceedingly rare. The combination of the Bisley's target-style grip with the snub-nose configuration gives the Belly Gun a unique and unmistakable appearance, blending precision shooting ergonomics with concealed carry practicality from the Old West era.
We believe this example to be modified shortly after leaving the factory.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Bisley Model Single Action Army is a distinctive and historically significant variant of the iconic Colt Single Action Army revolver, introduced in 1894 and produced until 1915. Specifically designed with target shooting and competitive marksmanship in mind, the Bisley differs from its standard SAA counterpart in several key ergonomic aspects. Most notably, it features a uniquely shaped, downward-curving grip frame, a wider, low-profile hammer spur, and an elongated trigger—modifications intended to promote a more controlled and stable shooting position. These changes were developed in response to feedback from marksmen participating in precision shooting matches at the famous Bisley Ranges in England, from which the model takes its name. Chambered in a wide variety of calibers, including .32-20, .38-40, .44-40, .45 Colt, and others, the Bisley was available in standard barrel lengths of 4¾", 5½", and 7½", and it gained favor among target shooters, ranchers, and lawmen alike for its balance and accuracy.

Though mechanically identical to the original Single Action Army in terms of function, the Bisley’s altered grip angle and hammer design lend themselves to a different shooting experience—one that many shooters find superior for deliberate, aimed fire. The revolver's robust construction, precise lock-up, and crisp single-action trigger made it a natural fit for competition shooting, and it also found use in the American West among those who preferred its unique feel and enhanced control. Collectors today value the Bisley both for its rarity—fewer than 45,000 were produced—and for its distinctive silhouette, which sets it apart from the standard Peacemaker profile. Original examples in high condition are especially prized, particularly in rarer calibers or configurations with factory engraving or historical provenance. The Colt Bisley Model remains a testament to the adaptability of the Single Action Army platform and to Colt’s willingness to innovate in response to the evolving demands of late 19th and early 20th-century shooters.
