The Colt New Police revolver represents an important evolutionary step in late-19th-century American handgun design, built on Colt’s modified New Pocket frame and distinguished by its longer square-butt grip for improved handling. Mechanically, it was essentially the same revolver as the Colt New Pocket, but its refined ergonomics and practical dimensions made it particularly appealing for law enforcement use. Most notably, it gained historic prominence when New York City Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt selected it as the first official issue revolver for the NYPD, firmly establishing its reputation as a serious service sidearm. Produced from 1896 to 1907, the New Police was offered in bright blue or bright nickel finishes, chambered in .32 Colt and .32 Colt New Police, and available with 2½-, 4-, and 6-inch barrels.
