Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
C.G. Haenel, founded in 1840 in Suhl, Germany by Carl Gottlieb Haenel, was a prominent German firearms manufacturer producing both military and civilian weapons. In the late 19th century, Haenel was one of several private firms contracted to produce the Gewehr 88 (Model 1888 Commission Rifle) and related carbines for the German Army, contributing a significant number of these service rifles. Following the adoption of the Mauser-designed Gewehr 98 in 1898, older Gewehr 88 rifles were gradually phased out of front-line service. In addition to military production, Haenel and other German firms produced rifles based on the Gewehr 88 action for the civilian market, and many surviving examples were later converted or specifically built as sporting and hunting rifles, often featuring turned-down bolt handles, elegant stocks, and refined trigger mechanisms typical of late-19th and early-20th-century German sporters.
