Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ithaca Flues Model, produced by the Ithaca Gun Company from 1908 to 1926, was one of the most iconic and best-selling American double-barrel shotguns of its era, with over 223,000 units manufactured. Designed by Emil Flues, it featured an innovative three-piece lock mechanism that improved reliability and simplified maintenance. Available in gauges ranging from 10 to 28, the shotgun catered to a wide variety of hunters and sportsmen. Its diverse grading system ranged from the entry-level Field Grade—with plain walnut stocks and smokeless steel barrels—to higher grades like the No. 1 Special, No. 1, and No. 1 1/2, which offered finer walnut and premium barrel steels such as those from Cockerill or Krupp. More elaborate grades (No. 2 through No. 7) included intricate engraved artwork, select wood, rich case-hardening, and deluxe fit and finish. The pinnacle of the line was the Sousa Special, a lavishly engraved presentation-grade model named after composer and trap-shooting enthusiast John Philip Sousa.

Notably, in 1919, the Field Grade’s grip design transitioned from a round knob half-pistol grip to a capped pistol grip, coinciding with the discontinuation of the No. 1 Special grade. Higher-grade models often featured automatic ejectors operated by a coil spring mechanism housed in the fore-end. The Flues Model was favored by prominent figures and private estates alike and left a lasting legacy as a blend of functionality, craftsmanship, and cultural significance in American firearm history.
