Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1890 is a landmark slide-action rimfire rifle that combined John Browning’s elegant small-arms thinking with Winchester’s production muscle to produce one of the most successful gallery and small-game rifles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Introduced in 1890 and produced in various forms until the early 1930s (final stock cleanup through 1941), the Model 1890 is a top-ejecting, tubular-magazine pump rifle that originally featured a 24? octagonal barrel, a case-hardened receiver (changed to blued finishes after 1901), and finely fitted walnut furniture—attributes that made it durable, pleasant to handle, and excellent for high-volume shooting in shooting galleries, youth training, and small-game work. It was chambered in the rimfire calibers of its day (.22 Short initially, with .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle added to the lineup later, and the .22 WRF introduced for the Model 90 family), and Winchester stamped barrels for a single specific chambering (guns are not interchangeable between .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 LR, and .22 WRF). The Model 1890’s smooth, short-throw pump action, positive extraction, and tubular feeding combined to make it fast on follow-ups and especially well suited to the gallery and pest-control roles that defined much of its commercial success. Winchester produced the Model 1890 in three distinct model groups (commonly called First, Second, and Third Models), with a range of standard and deluxe options that altered sights, finishes, and stock appointments. The First Model (c.1890–1892) used a solid frame and case-hardened receiver and is relatively scarce; the Second Model (c.1892–1908) introduced a takedown feature and later changed from case-hardened to blued receivers and was offered in both Standard and Deluxe finishes (deluxe rifles often had fancy checkered stocks and grooved slide handles); the Third Model (from about 1908 into the 1930s, often marketed as Model 90 on later production) added mechanical refinements such as an externally locking breech bolt and continued to be offered in both plain and fancy versions. Across those variants, Winchester supplied multiple barrel lengths and sight options (fixed and adjustable rear sights, and later pistol-grip stock options), and roughly three-quarters of a million to near 850,000 examples were produced in total—numbers that explain why surviving examples are relatively common but also why certain early First Models and rarer caliber/finish combinations are prized by collectors. If you’re assessing a Model 1890 today, key points to check are the model-period features (solid vs. takedown frame), the barrel chamber marking for correct caliber, the receiver finish (case-hardened vs. blued), and whether the rifle is a Standard or Deluxe grade—each of which strongly affects both historical identity and market value.
