Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1910 is a fine early example of Winchester’s innovative self-loading rifle line. Chambered exclusively in .401 Winchester Self-Loading (.401 WSL), the Model 1910 was a blowback-operated, semi-automatic rifle designed by Thomas Crossley Johnson, one of Winchester’s most influential engineers. This rifle features a 20-inch barrel finished in Winchester’s rich blue, fitted with a blade front sight paired to a Marbles adjustable rear sight for flexible accuracy. The smooth hardwood buttstock and forearm provide a sturdy yet traditional sporting appearance, while the detachable 4-round box magazine, located directly ahead of the trigger guard, gave the rifle a modern edge for its time. Markings are of the standard Winchester type, with clear factory roll stamps confirming its origin and chambering. Introduced in 1910 and produced until 1936, the Model 1910 was the most powerful rifle in Winchester’s self-loading series, which also included the Models 1905 and 1907. Its exclusive chambering in .401 WSL made it suitable for hunting large North American game such as deer, elk, and even moose, and it became a favorite among sportsmen looking for fast follow-up shots with greater power than earlier autoloaders. Beyond the civilian market, the Model 1910 also found military interest. Both the French Third Republic and the Imperial Russian government ordered limited numbers during World War I, primarily for use by aircraft observers before machine guns became standardized for aerial combat. Although later supplanted in service by the more common Winchester Model 1907 in .351 WSL, the Model 1910 remains a fascinating blend of sporting and military firearm history. With only about 20,786 rifles manufactured, early-production examples like this 1911-dated rifle hold significant historical and collector interest today.
