Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1913 Colt 1911 U.S. Army in .45 ACP, finished in its original brushed blue, is one of the most historically significant and visually striking examples of early American military sidearms, representing the second full year of production of John Browning’s revolutionary design and capturing the transitional machining and finish characteristics that collectors prize today. Early 1913 pistols still showcased Colt’s meticulous hand-polishing, with finely brushed flats, rounded radiused edges, and the deep, almost ink-black blue that defined pre–World War I craftsmanship—far more elegant than the later wartime Parkerized finishes. These pistols feature the early 1911 pattern elements that enthusiasts immediately recognize: the long, smooth-faced trigger; the flat mainspring housing without a lanyard loop lip; the short grip safety tang; the checkered wide-spur hammer; and the small half-moon front sight paired with a narrow rear notch, all of which give the gun unmistakable early-production character. Markings from this period—the crisp UNITED STATES PROPERTY line on the frame, the MODEL OF 1911 U.S. ARMY slide marking, and the small inspector’s cartouches—are sharply struck and historically important, offering a direct tie to the Ordnance Department’s earliest acceptance of Browning’s masterpiece.

Mechanically, these pistols retain the original internal design that made the 1911 legendary: a robust tilting-barrel, short-recoil system; a beautifully machined slide-to-frame fit; and a trigger that, even in military configuration, often breaks cleaner than many modern service pistols. A 1913 example also predates many incremental wartime changes, making it a true representation of the 1911 as Browning envisioned it—a combat pistol built with commercial-grade attention to detail. When viewed today, an original 1913 U.S. Army Colt 1911 is not only a functional and surprisingly shootable firearm but also a tangible artifact of American military history, tied to the earliest adoption period of what would become one of the most iconic service pistols in the world.
