Item Description

Bryant Ridge Auction Company is pleased to present this historic double-action revolver, this is the Colt New Service!

This particular Colt New Service revolver showcases several distinctive markings that provide insights into its history and modifications. On the left side of the barrel, it is stamped with “45 COLT” and “NEW SERVICE XXX ELEY,” indicating its association with both the .45 Colt and .455 Eley calibers. Meanwhile, the right side of the frame bears the inscription “NOT ENGLISH MAKE,” further emphasizing its origin. Additionally, the frame, cylinder, and the right side of the barrel are adorned with British-proof markings, which suggest its use and acceptance in British military service. Based on our research and the barrel’s stamping, it appears that this revolver underwent a conversion from .455 Eley to .45 Colt at some point in its history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1898, Colt unveiled its first large-frame, swing-out cylinder revolver: the Colt New Service. This model quickly became Colt's primary large-frame revolver, remaining in production until World War II. The New Service garnered immediate acclaim from both military and civilian customers seeking a robust, powerful handgun featuring the innovative swing-out cylinder design. Its popularity was reflected in the substantial quantities produced, as it was offered in a wide array of chamberings, including .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .38-40, .44-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .45 ACP, .45 Long Colt, .450 Eley, .455 Eley, and .476 Eley. The New Service also came in various configurations, including official issue models for the U.S. military as well as foreign military and police forces. Manufactured from 1898 to 1942, the New Service initially featured hard black rubber grips with molded checkering and Colt logos, a design that lasted until the late 1920s. Following that period, it was equipped with checkered walnut grips adorned with silver Colt medallions. The revolver was available in several barrel lengths—4", 4½", 5", 5½", 6", and 7½"—and came in a range of finishes, including blue, bright nickel, and dull brushed blue for military variants.

During World War I, the British and Canadian governments placed substantial orders for the Colt New Service revolver, acquiring approximately 60,000 units for their ground troops and the Royal Flying Corps. These revolvers were adopted as a limited standard issue model, primarily chambered in .455 Eley for British forces and .45 Long Colt for Canadian troops. Before the war, many British officers had opted for commercial New Service revolvers over the standard-issue Webley revolver, which made the transition to the New Service during the conflict a logical choice. The New Service's reputation for reliability and power, coupled with its familiarity among officers, contributed to its acceptance as a dependable sidearm in the trenches and skies of World War I.
