Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 1892 is one of John Browning’s most successful lever-action designs, engineered as a lighter, more compact alternative to the Model 1886 and intended to replace the venerable Model 1873. Chambered here in .38 WCF (.38-40 Winchester), this carbine features a 20-inch blued barrel paired with a smooth walnut straight-grip stock and forearm, making it both durable and well-balanced for use in the field. Its blade front sight and adjustable rear sight provided dependable accuracy, while the slick, dual locking-block lever action gave it the strength to handle popular pistol calibers of the day. With over a million Model 1892s produced before Winchester ended production in 1941, the rifle gained a reputation for reliability and became a favorite among ranchers, lawmen, explorers, and hunters alike. What sets this particular example apart is the marking on the left side of the buttstock reading “LAPD-293.” This indicates it was once in the inventory of the Los Angeles Police Department, almost certainly as a departmental or property-issued weapon. Police-marked Winchesters like this are scarce and highly sought after by collectors, as they carry a tangible link to the history of American law enforcement in the early 20th century. Firearms issued to major metropolitan police forces were often used in patrol or guard duty, and their department markings were applied for accountability and tracking purposes. The LAPD stamp, combined with the Winchester’s historical significance as one of Browning’s strongest and most enduring lever-action designs, makes this rifle not only a fine example of a Model 1892 carbine but also a unique piece of Los Angeles police history.
