Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mosin–Nagant is a five-shot, bolt-action military rifle, officially designated as the 3-line rifle M1891 and commonly referred to as Mosin's rifle in Russia. Developed between 1882 and 1891, it primarily fires the 7.62×54mmR cartridge and was used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, among others. With over 37 million units produced, it is one of the most mass-produced military rifles in history and remains in use in various conflicts today. The Russian military adopted the M1891 in 1891, with production starting in 1892 at multiple arsenals, including Tula and Izhevsk, and a substantial order was also placed with a French arms factory. At the onset of World War I, the Russian government ordered 1.5 million M1891 infantry rifles from Remington Arms and 1.8 million from New England Westinghouse due to a critical shortage of arms. Production continued until halted by the October Revolution in 1917, with only 469,951 rifles delivered by the time the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed. The new Bolshevik government canceled payments to the American manufacturers, leaving Remington and Westinghouse facing bankruptcy. The U.S. Army subsequently purchased the remaining 280,000 rifles, which were used by American and British forces in the North Russia Campaign in 1918. These rifles also served as training weapons for U.S. troops and were designated informally as "U.S. Magazine Rifle, 7.62mm, Model of 1916." In 1917, 50,000 rifles were sent to aid the Czechoslovak Legions in Siberia. During the interwar period, many of these rifles were sold to private citizens in the U.S. for $3 each by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship, leading to their current status as collectible items, especially if they remained unaltered and without import marks.
