Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historic bolt-action rifle for auction; this is the Danzig Imperial Arsenal Gewehr 98 (Gew98)!
A Danzig Imperial Arsenal Gewehr 98 (Gew98) fitted with a 24" barrel is a compact example of the Mauser 98 pattern as produced at the Danzig (Gdansk) arsenal. It retains the Model 98’s controlled-feed, two-lug bolt with third safety lug, five-round internal magazine, and tangent rear sight, but the shorter 24" tube makes the rifle handier in wooded terrain and easier to carry while still preserving excellent inherent accuracy. Collectors and shooters should inspect matching serials, arsenal proof marks, bore condition, and headspace—these factors determine both safe firing potential and collector value.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Danzig Imperial Arsenal Gewehr 98 is essentially the Mauser Model 98 as produced and finished at the Danzig (now Gdansk) arsenal for Imperial German service — a full-length, service-pattern bolt-action rifle built around the proven Mauser 98 action. Like other Gewehr 98 examples, it is chambered for the 7.92×57mm Mauser service cartridge, employs a controlled-feed, two-lug bolt with a third safety lug, and feeds from a five-round internal box magazine loaded by stripper clip. Externally, the rifle follows the classic G98 silhouette: a full-length wooden stock with integral cleaning-rod channel and fixed bayonet lug, a long heavy barrel held by two barrel bands, and a tangent rear sight adjustable out to long ranges (typical sights on Gewehr 98s are graduated well beyond practical combat distances). The action’s long bolt throw, robust locking surfaces, and proven extractor design made the Gewehr 98 one of the most respected military bolt actions of its era, and Danzig-arsenal examples share that mechanical pedigree while sometimes exhibiting subtle workshop-level differences in finish, fitting, and marking compared with field-manufacturer Mausers. From a collector and shooter perspective, a Danzig Imperial Arsenal Gewehr 98 is prized for both its historical connections and its inherently strong, accurate action. Important evaluation points are provenance and markings (arsenal acceptance stamps, imperial proofs, and any unit or proofhouse cartouches), the condition and originality of the wood (clears, repairs, or full refinishes substantially affect value), bore condition and headspace, and the presence of matching serials on major components. Mechanically, the 98 action is robust and safe to fire when headspace and barrel/bore conditions are correct, but older military bores, corroded chambers, or repaired receivers can reduce accuracy or require gunsmith attention. For shooters who intend to fire period-type ammunition, careful ammunition selection (or the use of modern 7.92×57 reloads loaded to safe pressures for older rifles) and a pre-shooting inspection by a qualified armorer are essential. Collectors will pay premiums for well-marked, matching-number Danzig arsenal pieces, especially those with documented service history or original fittings; conversely, mismatched parts, non-period repairs, and heavy refinishing will reduce desirability. Overall, the Danzig Gewehr 98 occupies a compelling place for those interested in Imperial German small arms: it combines Mauser’s celebrated mechanical design with the particular historical footprint of the Danzig workshops, offering both shooting utility (when inspected and maintained) and strong collector interest.
