Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Pistole Parabellum, commonly known as the Luger or Luger P08, is a toggle-locked, recoil-operated semi-automatic pistol renowned for its distinctive design and historical significance. Patented by Austrian firearms designer Georg Luger in 1898, the Luger was developed as an improvement over the earlier Borchardt C-93 pistol. It was first produced by the German arms manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) under the name “Parabellum Automatic Pistol, Borchardt-Luger System.” The Model 1900 Parabellum was the first production model, followed by the Marinepistole 1904, designed specifically for the Imperial German Navy. The Luger was officially adopted by the Swiss military in 1900, the Imperial German Navy in 1906, and the German Army in 1908, where it became known as the Pistole 08 (P08). The P08 was chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, a cartridge developed by Luger himself.

Beyond Germany, the Luger was adopted as the standard service pistol by several countries, including Switzerland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil, Bolivia, and Bulgaria. Its popularity extended to various military and police forces worldwide. The Luger P08 is perhaps most famously associated with Germany during both World Wars, as well as the interwar Weimar Republic and the postwar East German Volkspolizei. Despite its eventual replacement by the Walther P38 in German service, the Luger remains an iconic symbol of early 20th-century firearm design.
