Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester U.S. Model of 1917, often simply called the U.S. Rifle, Caliber .30, Model of 1917 or informally the American Enfield, is a historically pivotal bolt-action service rifle that played a major role in arming American forces during World War I when standard Springfield rifles alone could not meet the urgent demand for infantry arms. As the United States entered the war in April 1917, there were roughly 600,000 Springfield Model 1903 rifles available, far too few to equip the rapidly expanding military; at the same time, Winchester, Remington and Eddystone were already tooling up to build British Pattern 1914 (.303 British) bolt-action rifles under contract, and the U.S. Ordnance Department saw an opportunity to quickly adapt this existing production capability by converting the Pattern 1914 design to chamber the U.S. .30-’06 Springfield cartridge, resulting in the officially adopted Model 1917 rifle.Winchester alone manufactured approximately 465,980 of these rifles during the conflict, contributing significantly to the total of over 2.4 million Model 1917 rifles produced before contracts ended in early 1919. Mechanically, the rifle is a strong, reliable bolt-action fed from an internal magazine holding six rounds (although routinely charged with five-round stripper clips like the Springfield), and it featured distinct characteristics such as a crooked (“dog-leg”) bolt handle to aid manipulation and a rear aperture sight mounted on the receiver with a leaf adjustable for elevation — a sighting system generally regarded as rugged and functional for its era.

Externally, the Winchester Model 1917 typically had a 26-inch barrel, robust wood furniture of oil-finished walnut, and metal parts originally finished in blued steel (with many later parkerized during overhaul programs). The rifle’s markings usually include “U.S./Model of 1917” on the receiver ring along with the maker’s name, and early Winchester examples sometimes bear simply a “W” mark. Although many doughboys preferred the lighter, more familiar Springfield 1903, the Model 1917 was actually issued in greater numbers in the American Expeditionary Forces and proved a reliable combat arm, fulfilling a critical need at a pivotal moment in U.S. military history. After the war, Model 1917 rifles continued in service through World War II in training and auxiliary roles and later entered civilian hands, where many were sporterized — meaning original, unaltered military examples are now comparatively scarce and historically prized among collectors.
