Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1911, designed by John Moses Browning and chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge, was formally adopted by the U.S. Army on March 29, 1911, under the designation “Pistol, Automatic, Caliber .45, Model of 1911.” Early production was handled by Colt Manufacturing Company, and beginning in 1914, a limited number were also produced under license by Springfield Armory. The 1911 is a short-recoil, semi-automatic handgun with a 7-round single-stack magazine that quickly gained a reputation for reliability, power, and suitability as a sidearm. After World War I, feedback from combat conditions led to ergonomic and safety refinements (shorter trigger reach, arched mainspring housing, extended grip-safety spur, better sights, trigger-guard relief) which were incorporated into the updated design that, beginning in June 1926, was officially designated the M1911A1. Over subsequent decades — including the interwar period, World War II, and beyond — many M1911/M1911A1 pistols (including older models) were refurbished, rebuilt, and reissued through U.S. arsenal and ordnance depot overhaul programs (occasionally resulting in mixed-origin “mixmaster” pistols combining parts from different manufacturers or eras).

When World War II drove massive demand for sidearms, contract production of M1911A1s was expanded beyond Colt to include other manufacturers such as Remington Rand, Ithaca Gun Company, Union Switch & Signal Company — and a small “educational-order” run by Singer Manufacturing Company — each under government contract, to supply large quantities of the pistol for wartime use. After 1945, no new government contracts for .45-caliber pistols were awarded, but the existing inventory of M1911/M1911A1 pistols remained in U.S. military arsenals and was periodically overhauled, ensuring the pistol’s continued presence in service and later among collectors and surplus-market users.
