The Colt Pre-Woodsman, produced from 1915 to 1927 with approximately 54,000 manufactured, represents the earliest evolution of Colt’s renowned .22 rimfire pistols. Designed by John M. Browning, this foundational model established the balance, accuracy, and refined handling that would define the entire Woodsman line for decades to follow.

The Colt Pre-Woodsman marks the earliest chapter in the development of Colt’s famed .22 rimfire automatic pistols. Introduced in 1915 simply as the Colt .22 Automatic Pistol, it would not receive the “Pre-Woodsman” designation until after later Woodsman models appeared. Designed by John M. Browning and produced through 1927, the Pre-Woodsman established the foundation for all later Woodsman-series pistols with its lightweight profile, superb balance, and excellent trigger, making it an instant favorite among target shooters and small-game hunters of the early 20th century.
