Chambered in .30-06 Springfield and featuring a 24-inch barrel, hooded blade front sight, and adjustable ladder-style rear sight, this 1920-manufactured rifle (serial 1191345) was built with both precision and durability in mind. Earlier Springfield production faced challenges with metallurgy, as some receivers were improperly heat-treated, resulting in brittleness. However, by the time the Mark I was in production, these issues had been addressed through the implementation of pyrometers and improved double-heat-treating techniques, as well as the introduction of nickel-alloy steel for enhanced strength. These advancements ensured that later 1903 rifles, including the Mark I, were significantly more robust and reliable than their early counterparts.
