Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Model 1908 Pocket Hammerless, introduced in 1908 and chambered in .380 ACP, is a compact semi-automatic pistol designed by John Moses Browning and manufactured by Colt. Despite its “Hammerless” name, it features an internal hammer hidden beneath the slide, giving it a smooth, snag-free profile ideal for pocket or holster carry. The pistol operates on a simple blowback system with a grip safety, and later production models added a manual thumb/slide safety and a magazine safety (disconnect). With a standard seven-round magazine, the Model 1908 quickly gained popularity for concealed carry and saw limited use by U.S. police and military contracts. Over its decades of production, collectors have come to classify examples into different “Types” based on design changes, helping historians and enthusiasts identify and date individual pistols. Today, the Model 1908 is celebrated for its elegant engineering, reliability, and historical significance.
