Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Police Positive was an improved evolution of the earlier Colt New Police revolver, introduced in 1907 as a compact, lightweight service arm intended for law enforcement and civilian use. Built on Colt’s small D-frame, it incorporated the company’s patented “Positive Safety” internal hammer-block system, which prevented the firing pin from contacting the primer unless the trigger was fully depressed—an important safety advancement for early 20th-century revolvers. Chambered in .32 Colt, .32 Colt New Police (.32 S&W Long), and .38 Colt New Police (.38 S&W), the Police Positive featured a six-shot fluted cylinder and fixed iron sights consisting of a half-moon front blade and rear notch. Its balanced proportions, smooth double-action trigger, and modest recoil made it easy to carry and quick to deploy, contributing to its widespread adoption by police departments and private citizens alike. Produced in various forms from 1907 to 1947, the Police Positive First Issue (1907–1927) was offered with barrel lengths of 2 1/2, 4, 5, and 6 inches, while finished in bright blue or bright nickel.

Early examples were fitted with hard rubber grips until 1923, after which checkered walnut grips with silver Colt medallions became standard. The Police Positive Second Issue, manufactured from 1928 to 1947, incorporated subtle refinements including a slightly heavier frame, a grooved top strap to reduce glare, and increased clearance between the rear of the trigger guard and the front of the grip frame for improved handling. Colt also offered a specialized target variant known as the Police Positive Target Model First Issue, designated Model “G”. Produced from 1907 to 1925, this version featured a 6-inch barrel, a flat-top frame, and adjustable target front and rear sights. It was chambered in .22 LR, .22 WRF, .32 Colt, and .32 Colt New Police, finished in bright blue, and followed the same grip transition from hard rubber to checkered walnut with silver medallions after 1923.
A second-issue target variant, designated the Police Positive Target Model "C", was produced from 1926 to 1941 and was similar to the earlier target model but built on a slightly heavier frame; finish options were predominantly bright blue with fewer examples in bright nickel. The success of the Police Positive directly led to the introduction of the lengthened-frame Police Positive Special in 1908, establishing the design as the foundation of Colt’s small-frame double-action revolver line. Today, the Colt Police Positive is highly regarded for its role in early modern policing, its mechanical refinement, and its lasting influence on subsequent Colt revolver designs.
