Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Army Special was a double-action revolver produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1908 until 1927, serving as a transitional design that bridged the gap between late 19th-century Colt revolvers and the more modern models that followed. Built on Colt’s medium “E-frame,” the Army Special was typically chambered in popular cartridges of the era such as .32-20, .38 Colt, and .41 Colt, and was offered with barrel lengths ranging from 4 to 6 inches. The revolver featured a swing-out cylinder, solid frame construction, and a smooth double-action mechanism that reflected Colt’s reputation for refined workmanship and reliability. Its overall design provided a durable service revolver suitable for both civilian use and official duty.
 
In 1927, the Army Special was renamed the Colt Official Police, which went on to become one of the most widely used law-enforcement revolvers in the United States during the mid-20th century. As a result, the Army Special is historically significant as the direct predecessor to that famous model. Today, surviving examples are appreciated by collectors for their early 20th-century craftsmanship, smooth action, and role in the evolution of Colt’s service revolver line. Well-preserved examples, particularly those retaining original finish and factory configuration, remain desirable among enthusiasts of classic American revolvers and Colt history.
