Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historical semi-automatic pistol today for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Pre-Woodsman Sportmodel from the McGivern-Groff Collection!

This Colt Automatic .22 Target Pistol, known today as the "Pre-Woodsman," is a historically significant example that predates Colt’s famous Woodsman line. Featured in the Amoskeag Auction No. 76 (March 27, 2010) catalog, this pistol, serial #41146, is chambered in .22 Long Rifle and fitted with a 4.5-inch barrel, likely shortened from the original 6-inch, with the breech area showing light purple and straw toning from the modification. It bears the one-line Colt’s Hartford address and is equipped with a half-moon serrated front sight, fully checkered walnut grips, and the high-speed mainspring housing, accompanied by a spare all-blue magazine marked “Colt Woodsman/Cal. 22 LR.” Beyond its fine features, this pistol holds remarkable provenance, having been part of the McGivern-Groff Collection, with documented use in Ed McGivern and Walter Groff’s speed-shooting tests. Included with the gun are a Colt factory letter, a notarized provenance letter from James Olsen (March 12, 2010) attesting to its history within the McGivern-Groff family, and a 1953 letter from McGivern to Groff discussing their testing of .22 and .38 pistols for “super speed” shooting. With its combination of early design, collector-grade condition, and extensive documentation, this Pre-Woodsman stands as an extraordinary piece of Colt history.

According to the factory letter, this example was sold to W.C. Hack and Son and shipped to Schoverling, Daly & Gales, New York, New York on June 23, 1924.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
From the Amoskeag Auction No. 76, March 27, 2010, auction catalog, "COLT PRE-WOODSMAN SPORTMODEL SEMIAUTOMATIC PISTOL FROM MCGIVERN-GROFF COLLECTION: serial #41146, 22 Lr, 4 1/2" barrel with a bright, excellent bore. Metal surfaces retain about 95% original blue on slide and frame, the barrel blocks/breech area of the frame showing some light purple and straw toning, likely from heat, perhaps used when the barrel was changed from 6" to 4". The barrel retains 99% original factory blue and shows the one line "Colts MFG. Co Hartford CT USA" address on the left side with half-moon, serrated face sight (the sportmodel woodsman with 4 1/2" barrel was not available until 1933, this frame was manufactured in 1924). The fully checkered walnut grips rate very good plus with flattening to the points and a few handling marks. The gun features the high-speed mainspring housing and also comes with a spare all-blue magazine marked "Colt Woodsman/Cal. 22 LR". The gun comes with a January 1953 dated letter from McGivern to Groff in which he mentions "...we are testing out 22 and 38 automatic pistols for speed -"super speed" and super speed draws- watching some of these sup-posed-to-be-fast-boys, trying to shove safeties off with one hand only operating the gun you are reminded of the old stunt of cranking up a model T Ford" interestingly he further states "- Fitzgerald of Colts used to have this trouble -demonstrating the 45 auto against my double action gun draws. It was interesting." A nice little Colt auto, likely use by Ed or Walter during some of these speed tests. Includes notarized letter attesting to provenance. (500/1000)"

From the letter by James Olsen,
"Gentlemen:

This letter is used to affirm the provenance of the below listed firearm, from the collections of Ed McGivern and Walter Groff. For over twenty years, until her death in 1997, my father Robert "Bob" Olsen was married to Helen Whitmore. Helen Whitmore was the oldest daughter of Russ Whitmore and was the niece of Walter and Peggy Groff. As a child she held targets for both Ed McGivern and Walter Groff as well as throwing aerial targets for them to shoot, on the Whitmores's Montana ranch that Walter Groff was part owner of. The Groff's and McGivern's were dear friends for many years, Walter Groff having been taught trick shooting by Ed McGivern. He is talked about and shown in numerous photos in McGivern's book "Ed McGivern's Book of Fast and Fancy Revolver Shooting". The Groff's had a sizable collection of Ed McGivern's firearms and gun leather and other items. "Aunt Peggy" Groff gave many portions of this collection to my father, Bob Olsen, some for Christmas in 1979. Other items she donated to the NRA Museum.

I have included for auction seven handguns and numerous holsters that "Aunt Peggy" said came from Ed McGivern. These were given to my father directly by Peggy Groff. One of these seven handguns is the Colt pre-woodsman Sport model semiautomatic pistol serial #41146. Other items include the numerous S.D. Myres, Brill * and Eubanks holsters as well as the portraits of Ed Mc Givern, set of Colt prints which were Walter Groffs and the target ball mold given to Walter from Ed. I inherited these items after the passing of my father in 2007. I still retain about 25 years of personal correspondence from the McGiverns to the Groffs, in addition to 16mm home movies and many personal photographs. I certify the above statements to be true and correct.

Dated: 3-12 - 2010 James Olsen"

The Colt Automatic .22 Target Pistol, known today as the "Pre-Woodsman," is a historically important handgun that laid the groundwork for Colt’s famous Woodsman line. This particular example, manufactured in 1920, is chambered in .22 Long Rifle and features a 4.5-inch barrel paired with a sleek blued finish. Its semi-automatic action was advanced for the era, offering reliable cycling and excellent handling characteristics in a compact rimfire platform. Fully checkered walnut grips add both function and classic styling, providing a secure and comfortable hold.

Sighted with a simple yet effective blade front and U-cut rear, the Pre-Woodsman was designed to deliver accuracy for target shooting and training, making it popular with both recreational shooters and competitive marksmen of the time. As an early production example, this pistol carries significant collector value, embodying the craftsmanship and innovation of Colt’s post–World War I firearms. Its combination of elegant design, functional precision, and historical significance makes it a standout piece in the evolution of American target pistols.
