Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Pocket Positive in .32 Police (.32 S&W) is a compact, double-action revolver designed with concealment and safety in mind, and this particular example is a First Issue model, manufactured sometime between 1905 and 1927. Built on Colt’s Improved New Police frame, the Pocket Positive was essentially an upgraded version of the earlier New Pocket model, incorporating Colt’s groundbreaking “Positive Safety” mechanism. This internal steel bar blocked the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger was deliberately pulled—adding a crucial layer of safety to the rebounding hammer design. The innovation made the revolver significantly safer to carry loaded, especially in a coat or vest pocket, which was its intended use. This safety advancement preceded similar features from competitors, like Smith & Wesson, by decades and became the standard in Colt’s double-action revolver line for much of the 20th century.

This First Issue model features a 3½-inch barrel, blued finish, and a knife-blade front sight with integral rear notch, all hallmarks of the early production variants. The revolver is fitted with checkered black gutta percha grips embossed with the Colt logo, offering both durability and a classic period appearance. Chambered in .32 Police, which is dimensionally similar to the .32 S&W Long, the Pocket Positive was an ideal choice for civilians, detectives, and business owners who wanted a reliable and easily concealable sidearm. Despite its small size, it reflects Colt’s commitment to precision and safety. The Pocket Positive First Issue laid the foundation for Colt’s later revolvers and remains a highly collectible piece of firearms history, representing a time when personal protection firearms were evolving rapidly in both design and technology.
