Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The 1926 Nagant M1895 is an early Soviet-era example of Léon Nagant’s distinctive revolver that served as the standard-issue sidearm of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet state for decades—a rugged, all-steel, seven-shot service revolver notable for an unusual and mechanically clever “gas-seal” system. Externally it reads as a heavy, utilitarian service pistol: a full-length steel frame and barrel, exposed hammer, fixed front blade and notched rear sights, and a right-side loading gate with an under-barrel ejector rod for single-cartridge extraction; inside, however, the Nagant’s cylinder does something almost no other revolver does—it moves forward when the hammer is cocked so the mouth of each chamber nearly engages the rear of the barrel, forming a seal that prevents the normally wasted gap of gas between cylinder and barrel. That gas-seal raises muzzle velocity slightly over what the cartridge would otherwise produce, reduces the characteristic flash/blast at the cylinder gap, and—uniquely—makes the revolver considerably easier to suppress with a shroud or suppressor that locks to the barrel. Chambered for the proprietary 7.62×38R Nagant cartridge, the pistol’s seven-round capacity and sturdy construction made it a dependable service arm in harsh conditions: the long, heavy steel parts soak up recoil and the fixed sights and long sight radius aid practical accuracy at typical handgun ranges. Soviet production examples from the 1920s carry the industrial finish and proof marks of state arsenals (Tula and Izhevsk), and many subtle manufacturing simplifications and robustness improvements of the post-Imperial era show through—features that contributed to the design’s legendary longevity in military, police, and civilian hands. In handling the M1895 you notice its deliberate, old-world controls, the tactile feel of the heavy single- and double-action trigger pulls, and the satisfying mechanical choreography of the cylinder advance/seal; historically and mechanically it remains one of the most idiosyncratic and interesting service revolvers ever adopted.
