Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
At the time of the Russian Revolution, Finland was still under the rule of Tsarist Russia. Following the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II in 1917, Finland seized the opportunity to declare its independence and successfully expelled Russian forces from its territory. In the aftermath, the newly independent nation found itself in possession of substantial stores of Russian military arms—chief among them, the Mosin-Nagant rifle. Facing an urgent need to build a national defense force and lacking the industrial base to rapidly produce a wholly new rifle, Finland pragmatically adopted the Mosin-Nagant M1891 (M/91) as its standard service rifle. During the interwar period, Finnish authorities actively traded other surplus rifles from their inventory with various European and Asian nations in exchange for more Mosins, particularly those captured or otherwise available in bulk. These rifles arrived in various conditions, ranging from fully serviceable to little more than parts kits, giving rise to the Finnish practice of rebuilding and assembling “new” M/91 rifles using salvaged components.

From 1922 to 1924, the first domestically assembled Finnish Mosin rifles were produced by Suomen Ampumatarvikekhdas (SAT) in Riihimäki, with the barrels marked “SAT Riihimäki.” In 1925, Tikkakoski Oy—later more widely known by its brand “Tikka”—began manufacturing new M91 barrels. These were assembled into complete rifles bearing 1925, 1926, and 1927 date markings. By 1926, and continuing into 1927, these Tikka barrels featured a distinctive, heavier profile with a step near the muzzle to accommodate the use of standard Russian bayonets, a uniquely Finnish adaptation to suit both form and function. With the outbreak of the Continuation War (1941–1944), Finland dramatically increased rifle production, assembling large quantities of M/91 rifles using newly produced barrels from both Tikka and the state-run VKT (Valtion Kivääritehdas).

Additional barrel blanks were also imported from Belgium, though these were not assembled into complete rifles until after the war. These postwar rifles, built from the high-quality Belgian blanks, are today known as “B barrels” among collectors. The Tikkakoski M/91s, especially those produced during wartime, are renowned for their blend of foreign and domestic parts, careful assembly, and excellent cold-weather performance. As a result, they stand as a testament to Finland’s resourceful military planning and skilled arms craftsmanship during one of the most turbulent periods in its history.
