Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this EARLY PRODUCTION bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester Model 54.
Early production examples of the Winchester Model 54—particularly those manufactured between 1925 and 1930—are highly sought after by collectors for their significance as the direct predecessor to the legendary Winchester Model 70. Although approximately 50,145 Model 54 rifles were produced during their 11-year production run from 1925 to 1936 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, truly original and unaltered examples have become increasingly scarce. As a result, early rifles that remain in factory configuration are considered particularly desirable and represent an important piece of the evolution of Winchester’s bolt-action sporting rifles.

The Winchester Model 54 is a bolt-action sporting rifle introduced in 1925 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company and represents one of the company’s earliest successful attempts to produce a modern bolt-action hunting rifle for the American market. Developed during a period when bolt-action rifles were becoming increasingly popular among hunters, the Model 54 was heavily influenced by the design principles of the military Mauser 98 action. It featured controlled-round feeding with a large claw extractor and was offered in several popular hunting calibers of the era, including .30-06 Springfield and .270 Winchester. The rifle was marketed as a reliable and accurate sporting arm suitable for a wide range of hunting applications.

Mechanically, the Model 54 incorporated many features that would later influence the design of the famous Winchester Model 70, which eventually replaced it in 1936. While the Model 54 was well regarded for its strength and dependable feeding system, it had some design limitations, such as a less refined safety and bolt handle arrangement compared to later developments. Despite these early shortcomings, the rifle established Winchester’s reputation in the bolt-action sporting rifle market and laid the groundwork for one of the most celebrated hunting rifles ever produced. Today, the Winchester Model 54 is appreciated by collectors and firearms historians as an important transitional design that bridged early military-style bolt actions and the refined sporting rifles that followed.
