The Colt Ace, is an exceptional example of one of Colt’s most innovative pre-war pistols. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle with a blued finish and a 4¾" barrel, this semi-automatic pistol was originally designed to mirror the ergonomics and handling of the Colt M1911 service pistol, making it ideal for low-cost training. Featuring fixed blade front and adjustable rear sights, as well as finely checkered walnut grips, this early Colt Ace maintains the classic aesthetic and feel of the full-sized .45, while offering the economy and ease of the .22 cartridge. The markings on this pistol are standard for the model, and its overall construction reflects Colt’s pre-war quality and precision.

Introduced in 1931, the Colt Ace addressed the military’s need for a training pistol that mimicked the recoil of the .45 ACP without the high cost of ammunition. Central to this innovation was the “Floating Chamber,” a clever mechanism that dramatically increased the felt recoil of the .22 round—reportedly multiplying it by four. Remarkably, this concept was the brainchild of a self-taught designer from Godwin, North Carolina, who developed much of his work while incarcerated. The floating chamber allowed the Ace to operate with a standard-weight slide and springs, providing a realistic training experience on the 1911 platform. Production of the original Ace ceased with the onset of World War II, although a small postwar batch was assembled in 1947. The concept was revived decades later in the form of the Colt Service Model Ace, which was produced from 1978 to 1982. Early examples like this one, however, remain highly sought after by collectors and firearms historians for their unique engineering and historical relevance.
