Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Model 1908 Vest Pocket is a compact, hammerless, striker-fired, semi-automatic single-action pistol. Designed by John Moses Browning and manufactured by the Colt Manufacturing Company from 1908 to 1948, it was marketed as a small, concealable firearm that could be easily carried in a vest pocket or purse. The Model 1908 followed Browning’s earlier European design, the FN Model 1906, and both pistols were chambered for the Browning-invented .25 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol) cartridge. Internally known as the Model "N," the 1908 Vest Pocket measures 4.5 inches in overall length, with a 2-inch barrel, and weighs approximately 13 ounces. It is fed by a six-round single-column magazine and features fixed open iron sights, modest but sufficient for the short-range engagements for which the pistol was intended. The Colt Model 1908 incorporated several advanced safety features for its time. Standard features included a slide-locking safety and a grip safety, while in 1916 Colt engineer George Tansley introduced a magazine safety disconnector, preventing the pistol from firing when the magazine was removed.

This device was added to production in 1916-1917 in the latter 139,000 serial number range and was patented by Colt in 1917. During its 34 years of production, approximately 409,061 pistols were manufactured, with production paused from 1943 to 1945 due to World War II. After the war, some additional pistols were assembled from existing parts, bringing the total number to approximately 420,705 units. The Model 1908 also saw limited use with American and British OSS and SOE units, valued for its small size and high concealability. Today, it remains a prized collector’s piece and a key part of Colt’s legacy in compact firearm design.
