Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 97, commonly referred to as the Model 1897 or M97, is a historically significant pump-action shotgun designed by John Moses Browning. Chambered in 16 gauge with a 2 ¾" chamber, this example features a 28-inch barrel with a modified choke bore, providing a balance between range and spread for hunting or sport shooting. Finished in blue and fitted with a smooth hardwood buttstock and ribbed forend, the rifle retains a classic aesthetic while offering the robust functionality Winchester was known for. Equipped with a bead front sight, the Model 97 maintains simple and reliable aiming suitable for quick target acquisition. Its pump-action design with an external hammer and tube magazine ensures dependable cycling of shells, a hallmark of Browning’s improvements over the earlier Model 1893. Historically, the Model 1897 represented a major step forward in shotgun design. Introduced in 1897 and produced until 1957, over one million units were manufactured, making it a staple in American homes, on hunting grounds, and in military and law enforcement service. The Model 97 was offered in multiple barrel lengths and grades, and it became renowned for its reliability and versatility. Even today, original Model 97s remain prized for their historical significance, ruggedness, and classic Winchester craftsmanship, making them both collectible and functional firearms.
