Introduced in 1905, the Model 11 was America’s first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun and was based on John Browning’s long-recoil operating system, shared with the Browning Auto-5. In this design, both barrel and bolt recoil together before separating to extract and eject the spent shell and chamber a fresh round, a system noted for its rugged reliability. A manually adjustable friction ring allowed the action to be tuned for light or heavy loads, increasing versatility. This 1939-manufactured example in 16 gauge, with a 26-inch fixed-cylinder barrel and smooth walnut furniture, reflects the Model 11’s enduring appeal as a dependable hunting shotgun and an important milestone in the development of semi-automatic sporting arms.
