Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this coveted double/single-action revolver today for a penny-start auction, this is the Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum.
Today, the .357 Registered Magnum is highly prized by collectors as Smith & Wesson’s first revolver chambered for the .357 Magnum and one of the company’s most significant prewar offerings. Each Registered Magnum could be ordered with a wide range of factory-specified options, and each example was individually registered, making every revolver effectively a bespoke build. The Registered Magnum was manufactured from 1935 to 1939, with a total production of approximately 5,224 revolvers. Its limited production run, historical importance, and role in the early development of the .357 Magnum cartridge make it a cornerstone model in Smith & Wesson collecting and one of the most historically significant revolvers of the 20th century.
This particular example bears the registration number “REG.4614”.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. It was called a Registered Magnum because a registration number was stamped in the yoke cut as “Reg XXXX.” This was the first Smith & Wesson revolver to use a counter-bored cylinder to protect the cartridge rims. All frames featured a pinned barrel and an extractor shroud. Both the barrel rib and top strap were finely checkered, with serrated backstrap and forestrap. “S&W .357 Magnum” was roll-marked on the right side of the barrel. Early specimens have a small trademark logo on the left side, while later guns (from approximately May 1936) have a large logo on the right side. The .357 Registered Magnum uses a spring-loaded ball detent in the yoke to help lock the cylinder open. The cylinder is a six-shot fluted type with a nominal length of 1.62 inches. Other features include a .400-inch checkered hammer spur and a .265-inch grooved or .312-inch serrated trigger. Serial numbers ranged from approximately 45,756 to 62,489. On October 16, 1939, Harold Wesson ordered that registration numbers no longer be marked in the yoke cut to support wartime production. Approximately 5,224 .357 Registered Magnums were manufactured from 1935 to 1939.
