Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Luger P08, also known as the Pistole Parabellum, is one of the most iconic and recognizable autoloading pistols of the 20th century, admired for its aesthetics, ergonomics, and engineering. Designed by Georg Luger in the late 1890s as an improvement over the Borchardt pistol, it employed the unique toggle-lock action derived from Hiram Maxim’s early machine gun designs. Over the decades, the Luger earned a reputation for strength, accuracy, and reliability, remaining in German service long after the adoption of the Walther P38. During World War II, production shifted primarily to Mauser, and the use of letter-coded markings such as “byf” was implemented to obscure manufacturing sources. By the early 1940s, the “byf”-coded Lugers represented the final phase of Mauser production before the model was fully phased out in favor of the P38.

This particular example is a Mauser Model P08 Luger with the “byf” code, manufactured in 1941, chambered in 9mm with a 4-inch barrel. It features a blue finish, checkered walnut grips with white diamond inlays, and the classic blade front and V-notch rear sights. The pistol retains detailed military proof and acceptance markings, including eagle-over-“655” Waffenamts, eagle-and-swas-tika stamps, and full and partial serial numbers found throughout the frame, barrel, and breech components. As one of the last WWII-issued Mauser Lugers, this piece holds significant historical and collectible value, appealing both to military historians and dedicated firearm collectors. Its place in the transition from the famed Luger to the P38 ensures its enduring importance as a tangible artifact of German arms production during World War II.
