The Colt “Commando” was a wartime simplification of the Colt Official Police revolver produced to meet U.S. government needs during World War II — pared down with cost-saving features such as a dull parkerized finish, simplified controls, and molded “Coltwood” grips for rapid production and hard service use. Physically expect a 4" (common) or shorter barrel, unpolished external surfaces, and simplified/internal finishing compared with commercial OP examples; many were distributed to military police, plant security, and intelligence units (a smaller “Junior Commando” with a 2" barrel was also produced). Collectors prize Commandos for wartime provenance and their place in Colt’s WWII production story — complete, documented examples (matching paperwork or unit markings) and “junior” short-barrel specimens are particularly collectible.
