Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this Historic WWII-era double-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Commando!
The Colt Commando was introduced in 1942 as a wartime adaptation of the Colt Official Police revolver, designed to meet the urgent demand for reliable sidearms during World War II. Produced between 1942 and 1945, approximately 50,000 of these rugged .38 Special revolvers were made, featuring a parkerized finish and Coltwood grips. This particular example, bearing serial number 87, represents an extremely early production piece—one of the very first Commandos manufactured—placing it at the very beginning of Colt’s wartime revolver output and marking it as a historically significant example from the model’s inception.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Commando is Colt’s wartime adaptation of the proven Official Police revolver, produced to meet urgent domestic and governmental needs during World War II. Built on Colt’s E-frame and chambered in .38 Special, the Commando was offered primarily with 4" barrels and in smaller numbers with 2" barrels (with rare reports of a few 6" examples). Finished in durable parkerizing and fitted with early reddish-brown Coltwood grips, the design retained the solid double-action/double-single functionality, six-shot fluted cylinder, and straightforward controls that made the Official Police a service favorite. Production totaled roughly 50,000 units between 1942 and 1945, with serials beginning at one and proceeding to about 50,617, reflecting Colt’s substantial wartime contribution to domestic arms supply. Historically, the Commando served a wide range of roles: from plant and facility defense to issues with civilian and governmental agencies during and after the conflict. Many examples carry U.S. Government inspector marks, including the “flaming bomb” acceptance stamp, along with standard Colt proof and inspector stamps, and serials on the frame, crane, and sideplate consistent with Colt factory practice. Because the Commando shares its lineage and parts commonality with the Official Police, interchangeability of components between the two models is frequently observed—an attribute that underscores Colt’s pragmatic wartime manufacturing approach. After the war, many Commandos were allocated to police departments and other agencies, and their documented service history and clear association with the WWII home-front effort make them historically significant and firmly rooted in Colt’s mid-20th-century production legacy.
